In the News: Love and Shamanism in a Newport Mansion

Belcourt Castle Newport RI••• Great story in the New York Times today about “Carolyn Rafaelian, the 46-year-old founder of Alex and Ani, a rapidly growing, wildly successful New Age jewelry line,” who has a place in Tribeca and, more notably, a manor house in Newport, R.I. The article has everything! She fell in love with a contractor and bought the place because she felt he was the reincarnation of a former owner. She hired a shaman to cleanse the bad energy. And this: “the infamous no-underwear party of 1999, whose 800-plus guests […] were required to attend commando-style.” Photo courtesy Belcourt Castle on Facebook.

••• “Former Shang chef [Susur Lee] has partnered with the China Center to open a restaurant on the 66th floor of One World Trade Center. This is actually the first restaurant that has been officially announced for the building, if you can believe it. The restaurant, which does not have a name yet, will be located in the private members-only club inside the China Center, so presumably, the general public will not have access to this establishment.” —Eater

••• “Womenswear boutique Otte is gearing up to open two more stores, which will bring the total count to six. A Nolita location is coming at the end of the month, and according to WWD, it’ll focus on designer/storeowner Kay Lee’s line. Another shop is planned for Brooklyn, which is where Lee opened her first store back in 1999.” —Racked
