In the News: Pearl River Mart Will Close

••• Pearl River Mart is closing by the end of the year, which is obviously depressing. Above: a find from last year. (I was also bummed to see that Avignone Chemists in the Village has closed; I never went there, but I thought of it as a landmark.) UPDATE: Forgot to include this part! Company president Ching Yeh Chen “said she is scouting for smaller brick-and-mortar locations farther south of Canal Street, where rents are around $80 a square foot for ground-floor space. A relocation would also mean downsizing the breadth of Pearl River’s product mix from its current roster of more than 17,000 chic and exotic items.” —Crain’s

••• “Two-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker and Emmy-winning ‘House of Cards’ director David Fincher quietly (and via trust) dropped not quite six million bucks for a posh New York City pied-a-terre” at 7 Harrison. —Variety

••• In its report on Le District, Downtown Post NYC says that the home decor section, called Chez Moi, “will open in the next few weeks. It will sell such items as wine openers and knives, petanque sets, coffee table books and cookbooks, handmade French, Moroccan and African market bags and baskets, sustainable wood hostess gifts, handmade soap and handmade pottery.”

••• “Both of New York’s United States Senators […] and five of its Congressman […] have introduced legislation in the Senate and House of Representatives calling for the creation of an African Burial Ground Museum. […] The proposed museum and education center would be located at the current African Burial Ground National Monument, at Duane and Elk Streets.” —Broadsheet

  1. If I see Fincher on the street I wanna yell “The first rule of Fight Club is YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB!” LOL

  2. I’m going to dream big and hope that Pearl River Market moves into the Duane Reade space and Broadway and Chambers. (Yes, I know Modell’s is reportedly expanding into that space….but I can still hope.)
