There’s a huge mural underway on the side of 102 Franklin, the building where All Good Things used to be. Alex Barnes guessed that it’s by JR—who, indeed, has a shot of it on his website. DDG, the developers of 100 Franklin, the two-triangle condo going up on the adjacent vacant lot, lent the space and helped with the permitting, but it’s not a formal collaboration.
I’ll post a shot of the completed mural here when it’s done.
UPDATE: Here’s where it was as of Wednesday morning. A shame about the graffiti that’s already on it.
UPDATE #2: @HelenRLittle says it’s a tribute to Misty Copeland, although I haven’t been able to verify that. [It’s not. See Update #4 below.]
UPDATE #3: The finished mural is below. I overheard some folks saying that the dancer herself had helped paste a bit the other day, but there was some confusion as to whether it was Misty Copeland or not.
What’s more, the folks at the Tribeca Journal photo studio posted a pic on Instagram of JR, “who stopped by @tribecajournal studio to grab a birds eye view of his ballerina.”
UPDATE #4: “This image is of the amazing New York City Ballet Principal Dancer, Lauren Lovette,” comments Fredrick. “In 2014, JR and NYCB collaborated on an installation at the Company’s Lincoln Center home out of which grew other work, including a film, Les Bosquets, that was directed by JR and feature Ms. Lovette and Lil’ Buck.” Here’s the teaser for the film.
And here are a couple of shots from other angles.
I think it’s safe to assume that JR, who “exhibits freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people with large black and white images” (per his Twitter bio), also did the mural at Hudson and Spring:
And he also did this recent cover of the New York Times Magazine:
