••• “FDNY just pulled the body of a man, semi-conscious, out of the water just north of Pier 26,” emailed C. This is becoming an epidemic! (The photo comes from an anonymous reader.)
••• There’s a baffling article in amNY about how high rents are forcing “mom and pop design shops” and “independent chains” out of Soho, which I’d wager happened a decade ago. The print edition refers to “Pear River Mart” (saying it closed in April…?) and “Artimity” (instead of Artimide), and there’s a sidebar of “recent closings” that includes Band of Outsiders and C. Wonder, which didn’t fail because of rent. Anyway, there’s evidently a new SoHo Design District.

Erik,
Re: Soho – there are probably a slew of 20 year leases signed in the mid 90’s which are just coming due…
Hopefully reason will prevail…. Empty spaces are poor placeholders for neighborhoods.
All the 20 year leases signed in the mid 90’s are just coming due. :-)
Even so, the notion that something is on the verge of being lost in Soho is ludicrous—that horse left the barn years ago.
