“The shelter world can be sad,” says Brittany Feldman (above), who co-founded Shelter Chic with Amanda Folk. “Why can’t they be fun, happy places?” To that end, the two have created Shelter Chic, a non-profit dog and cat rescue, with a shop in a donated storefront on Chambers Street. It should be around for 12 months or so—and all of the proceeds go to animal rescue.
There are adorable—and sometimes rather edgy—goods for pets and the people who love them, as you can see in the photos below. Moreover, unlike most pet-supply stores, you’re also likely to see animals. The other day, a sweet dog named Keira was the star attraction. “Ultimately, our goal is to have a shelter,” says Feldman. “We’re looking for people to foster and adopt. Anyone already fostering an animal can bring it in for the afternoon—because increasing visibility is the best way to make an adoption happen.” Shelter Chic will also be hosting adoption events for like-minded organizations. Stop by and you might just meet a new family member whose photo will end up on the wall of successfully adopted animals.
P.S. Shelter Chic is also looking for volunteers to help in the shop.
Shelter Chic is at 79 Chambers (between Church and Broadway), shelterchic.org.
Sooooo impressive!!! Congratulations for your passion and devotion in helping animals who don’t have a say .
I am thankful that you are helping the world see that
people who abuse and abandon animals must be accountable for their action. These poor defensive animals must have people like you take up their cause… It is about time!
I am so proud of you and the work you are doing.. You are making a difference.
You are a caring example of what the word humanity truly means. Marjory
What a wonderful writeup! I am so happy we have young adults like you who will make a difference!
I am very proud!
Congratulations for the good work to raise money to help shelter animals. Please lose the “Be Kind to Animals or I’ll Kill you” shirt. Not funny.
I thought it was so funny I bought one. Comedy is subjective!
My dog River, a shelter dog, is playing with her Mr. Bill like crazy. Will be back to the store for more. Love what you are doing.
