In the News: Battery Park City Authority Ditched the Parks Enforcement Patrol

outstanding in field••• “At its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 27, the Battery Park City Authority board of directors voted to cancel its contract with the Parks Enforcement Patrol, which has provided security in Battery Park City for more than two decades. The vote came in a secret executive session. […] On Sunday night, Jan. 31, the PEP will depart and AlliedBarton personnel will take the place of the PEP.” —Downtown Post NYC

UPDATE: Thanks to J for responding to TribecaMom’s question about a connection between Governor Andrew Cuomo and AlliedBarton with a quote from the Broadsheet:

Until recently, Allied Barton was owned by the Blackstone Group, a multinational private equity and investment banking giant, where Mr. Mulrow served as a senior managing director before joining the Cuomo administration in January, 2015, as the newly reelected governor began his second term. The selection process that led to the BPCA’s hiring of AlliedBarton began a few months after Mr. Mulrow joined the Cuomo administration. In this process, the BPCA reviewed bids from more than 20 security firms. The Authority ultimately rejected multiple bids that were priced at less than half the cost of the $2.1 million contract that the BPCA eventually signed with AlliedBarton.

••• Apparently Mayor de Blasio made a deal with the tourism helicopter industry. From a release sent out by a group of politicians from affected areas: “We are encouraged that for the first time in years, we can say that some steps are being taken to reduce helicopter traffic from [Downtown Manhattan Heliport], and that the City administration is committed to engaging this issue. The deal requires 50% reduction in flights, cessation of all flights on Sundays, and 3rd party monitoring of industry compliance with the deal. We will continue to be vigilant, along with our communities, to make certain that the helicopter industry complies with these requirements and faces the maximum penalties outlined in the deal if they do not. And we will continue to advocate to stop the chop once and for all to ensure relief for our communities with a full ban.”

••• Also, a New York Times op-ed on the helicopter nuisance.

••• “At the Community Board meeting on Jan. 5, 2016, Brian Beary, director of Asphalt Green Battery Park City, asked the committee to approve the removal of the well-equipped kitchen that was designed to accommodate cooking classes.” —Downtown Post NYC

••• The New York Times included Mr. Locks, “which claims its main office is in TriBeCa,” in an article on fake online locksmiths. (Until a couple of months ago, Mr. Locks was at 205 Hudson, in the Canal Street storefront next to the former American Flatbread.

  1. Just more the same from BPCA. I’m surprised that the connection between Cuomo and AlliedBarton’s campaign contributions has not yet been revealed.

    • well, there’s this from the broadsheet, “Until recently, Allied Barton was owned by the Blackstone Group, a multinational private equity and investment banking giant, where Mr. Mulrow served as a senior managing director before joining the Cuomo administration in January, 2015, as the newly reelected governor began his second term. • Thanks, knew there had to be a connection. Must have missed this report.

        • We have 2 kids and have been living in battery park city for 15 years. Before we really enjoyed to see the parks to be cleaned with soap daily and patrol everywhere. The last 3 years, the cleanliness, demographics, and safety deteriorated tremendously. Everything is covered with dogs’ poop, people are not abiding by the rules, and nobody listens to park rangers. We saw 1,000 times when park patrol told dog owners to stop popping in the park, or other concerns, people do not listen to these ambassadors and behave in the worst manner because there is no control over them and because nobody can give them fines. Why all streets are stinking with dogs’ poop while there are numerous dog runs in the area? Barbarians

  2. I would like to know if the “tourist/security ambassadors” are able (and allowed) to perform CPR. IF someone is having a heart attack and they are standing next to them, what happens. I asked BPCA and they said that they are certified, but didn’t respond about if they are allowed to intervene.

  3. The Emperor of BPC (Mehiel) couldn’t care less what happened to the residents as long as he can keep collecting his handouts.
