You’ll Never Walk on a Subway Grate Again

I heard what sounded like a metal garbage can being dragged across pavement, so I went to the window: Smoke, then sparks, then flames were visible spurting out of a R/W subway grate on Broadway between Warren and Murray. It looks like a volcano. Here’s some video:

The FDNY has arrived; they seem to be letting it burn out (presumably because it’s electrical).

    More like NYC electrical fire pyrotechnics. Not uncommon with explosions and all.

    “A transformer fire beneath the intersection of Broadway and Murray streets just before 4:30 p.m. caused the loud pop and sent people to 911 to report an explosion, fire officials said.”
