The Duane Reade at Worth and Lafayette is permanently closing today, as TribecaMom reports. It joins two others in the general area to have closed in recent years—one at Broadway and Canal and another at Broadway and Chambers. Of course, there are still Duane Reade stores on Broadway at Duane and Park Place.
My understanding is that the original store was located between Duane and Reade Streets.
I have only the vaguest memory of it from when I moved here in the 70s but I remember it as very haphazard and ramshackle. It was a one-off then, that didn’t start to shine up its image until the late 80s/early 90s.
original one is on my block. Duane and Broadway and few years back renovated it…
Please see my response to Larry.
Yes – the original Duane Reade opened at 299 Broadway between Duane and Reade Streets where GNC is now. I remember when it moved to 305 Broadway in the 1970s.
Most Duane Reade stores will be closed and replaced by Walgreens.
Yes, there it was on the west side of West Broadway between Duane and Reade when I moved into the block in 1970! Remember it well!
