Seen & Heard: Last call on the Pier 17 rink

WINTER(LAND) IS ALMOST OVER
The Winterland Rink at Pier 17 season ends on Sunday, March 17, in case you want to finally go after promising you would for weeks. Skate time is unlimited. Prices are usually $22 including skates but there is neighborhood discount pricing Monday through Thursday for $16 and weekends for $19. And it’s $5 for Seaport residents on Wednesday. Skating aficionado Nooa Marantz-Pylkkanen doesn’t miss a Wednesday.

BASEBALL OPEN HOUSE
P3, the baseball afterschool and summer program on Pier 40, will host two open houses on Sunday, March 10 — one from 1 to 3, and one from 3 to 5. Meet the coaches, do some drills, have hot dogs and ice cream.

GUERILLA ART ON CHAMBERS??
This looks to me like a pretty cool piece of graffiti – though I can’t fight the feeling that it must be an ad for something I’m not tuned in enough to recognize.

FOUR YEARS FOR WASHINGTON MARKET PEDS
Local res and pediatrician Tiffany Otto Knipe (pictured with her own kids, who are not usually green) and her staff threw a party for the families in her practice on Sunday to celebrate the business’ fourth anniversary. When she started the concierge practice, Knipe had two families as patients. She now has 100, built entirely by word of mouth.

SHRED THE GNAR
Duane Park is hosting its annual All You Can Shred day on Saturday, April 13, from 10 to 2. Ordinarily I wouldn’t mention something this far in advance, but if you are really going to purge, you need to start now. The shredding is free.

DOCTOR WHO SCREENING
As the parent of a child who dressed as Tom Baker’s Doctor Who for two years in a row, I felt obliged to include this listing for March 13, 7p, at the Regal Battery Park City: Tom Baker’s 100-minute final adventure, “Logopolis,” on the big screen with all new, updated special effects! “Logopolis” features the first appearance of Janet Fielding as companion Teegan, Anthony Ainley as the Doctor’s archenemy The Master, and the regeneration of Fourth Doctor Tom Baker into Fifth Doctor Peter Davison! Tickets are $12.50.

NO OPEN CONTAINER LAW ON STONE STREET…
… so it’s perfect for St. Patrick’s Day. And since it’s a Sunday, the bars down there are kicking off at noon. Must be great to live on that block…

  1. And what time do the “bars kick off” on a regular Sunday when it’s not St. Patrick’s Day? How Rude!

    • Not rude, but normal. New York City bars may start serving alcohol at 7:00 AM Monday through Saturday and noon on Sundays. They must stop serving alcohol at 4:00 AM.

  2. TriBeCa Mom you are being a tad too sensitive. The comment wasn’t an indictment of Irish people – it is a well known fact that this year’s St. Patrick’s Day is going to be different than the usual Sundays on Stone Street. If you want to get all sensitive may I suggest focusing on say, Santa Con? What a load of bad behavior that fake holiday brings out!

  3. The street art is by Robert Janz – and it’s very much NOT advertising! Check his work out at https://www.janzworkon.com/ and follow him on instagram. Spotting his work around the neighborhood is like bumping into an old friend when you turn the corner.

  4. Bisoman is just calling in. Black Cat says “it’s an ad for Awake, Alert, Aware”.
