MAKING ART IN THE NABE
C. spotted this great New Yorker profile of artist Peter Sacks, who, when in the city, lives and paints here and swims in BPC. To quote: “Sacks made his first painting at the age of forty-nine. In the twenty years since … he has labored over nearly a thousand works of art, mounting ten solo shows at increasingly prestigious galleries and becoming one of the most exciting painters in America. In doing this, he has surprised his friends, his colleagues, and himself. Sacks is a private, solitary man. He spends fourteen hours a day alone, painting.”

CITY SUES FLOATING BILLBOARD
The city just upped it a notch – or a few – in its opposition to the floating LED billboard outside our windows by suing Ballyhoo Media for “repeatedly violating local laws.” Still, the barge floats on, seeming to be immune to all criticism, even in court. –Crain’s or New York magazine
LAND USE PROCESS FOR JAIL BEGINS
The Trib covered the first of what will be several ULURP hearings on the proposed jail tower that will replace the Tombs (and then some) at 124 and 125 White Street. Residents of the neighboring senior center said they can’t afford the health risks that will no doubt come with eight months of demolition and years of construction for the 450-foot tower. The issue will come before CB1’s land use committee on April 8.

Congratulations to Frenchette, who is well-deserving, and has an excellent chance to win. Their next door neighbor, Batard, won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in 2015.
