Late night hours kick in this weekend at Governors Island. Every Friday and Saturday night through August 31, ferries run until 10p. Ferry times are here.

LET THEM EAT CAKE
The US Coast Guard Cutter Lilac – docked on the north side of Pier 25 – will be open for tours this weekend, May 25 and 26, from 2 to 6p. All visitors will be served birthday cake! On view through July 28 on the ship will be the photos of Jean Miele who documents the city’s maritime heritage through the objects and vessels that survive. On the 26th, the ship will also stay open late as part of Fleet Week, till 10p, with a cash bar reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit.

ANCESTRAL CONNECTIONS AT NMAI
A show titled “Ancestral Connections” explores how 10 contemporary artists draw on aspects of their heritage to create new and compelling works of art. The show includes works by Marvin Oliver (Quinault/Isleta Pueblo, b. 1946), whose glass sculpture depicts salmon, from which his people are descended; Lillian Pitt (Warm Springs/Wasco/Yakama, b. 1943), who uses art to honor her culture and heritage from the Columbia River region; and Jim Schoppert (Tlingit, 1947–1992), whose sculptures challenge the definition of Northwest Coast Indian art.

FRENCHETTE SNAGS JAMES BEARD
Frenchette is the best new restaurant in the country, according to the James Beard Foundation. The awards, started in 1990, are judged by experts in each category.

AND…RAVE REVIEWS FOR EVEN THE GLASSES!
Even the glasses are getting honors. Bon Appetit raves about Frenchette’s wine glasses – which are actually Riedel water glasses — and since I am a bit obsessed with glasses myself, I include it here. The review: “The bowl was delicate but not overly so—narrower than that of your average red wine goblet, but proudly top-heavy perched atop a squat stem. It was also capacious enough for a bit of swirling and sniffing but not so big as to demand it.”
