MULTIPLE ACCIDENTS HALT CONSTRUCTION COMPANY
After a worker died in April at the construction site of 570 Broome in Hudson Square due to a crane accident, and then another crane collapsed — but did not injure anyone — just a couple of weeks ago, the city has halted all work operations for United Crane and Rigging. The company has been slapped with penalties, and must replace its supervisors who were working during the latest accident, says the Daily News.
ICONIC STOREFRONT — NOW SHUTTERED
The Birdbath Green Bakery–best known for its iconic storefront and original name, Vesuvio– closed on Friday, Gothamist reports, after 10 years at 160 Prince. Owner Maury Rubin, who had kept the original front intact during his tenure as owner, made a heartfelt Instagram post to mark its passing. The bakery was part of City Bakery.
FIDI HITS OFFICE LEASING RECORD
The Post reports that Fidi has leased 3.8 million square feet of office space this year, making it the best midyear mark in almost two decades. The jump in leases has been caused, in part, by businesses moving from uptown, where rent is more expensive.
It bears noting that the original Vesuvio opened in 1920. That part of SoHo up to about Bleeker Street was primarily occupied by Northern Italians, many from Genoa including the Balducci family or the eponymous grocery store.
Yes so true. I stopped going in after the change over though I am sorry to see it close. I liked Birdbath in TriBeCa.
