DIGGING WITHOUT A PERMIT
Neighbors on both sides of 86 Warren – the site of a proposed boutique hotel between Greenwich and West Broadway – were alarmed to see a backhoe making a 20-foot hole – down along the foundation of 92 Warren – without any permits registered with the DOB. CB1 requested an inspector and a stop-work order was issued.
111 MURRAY REVEALED!
M. sent some great pics of 111 Murray, whose sidewalk shed is finally down to reveal its glass entry and the West Street facade. (This pic also has a great view of 101 Barclay, or 240 Greenwich, which I happen to love. It was designed by Raul de Armas, the father of local resident Lisa de Armas, who was a partner at Skidmore Owings and Merrill back then. He is now is a founding partner at Moed de Armas and Shannon.)
TRUCK DUMPS ITS HAUL
R. sent this pic and notes you don’t see this every day. “A truck was attempting to load a dumpster onto its back in front of 15 Hubert on Monday morning and the thing just tipped over and fell onto the sidewalk.” One more thing to worry about.
ENCLOSED SHED DOWN AT GROSVENOR BUILDING
The shed that has been up for years on the west side of Broadway between Walker and White is finally down, and thanks to A. for the pic. But now the sidewalk bridge is going up as they finish work on the building. More TK on the project — High Court.
FOR KIDS ON GOVERNORS ISLAND
This weekend (August 17 and 18) on Governors Island: KoKo NYC will present a series of free public workshops for children ages 7+ focusing on the creation of sustainable energy machines, such as bike generators and windmills. Kids will use lumber, recycled materials and simple hand tools (saws, hammers, screwdrivers, etc.) to experiment and construct their creative machines under the guidance of KoKo teaching artists. No registration required, all are welcome to drop in. Hours are 11 to 5.
re: the digging at 86 Warren. That digger also created a huge crack in the middle of the newly finished sidewalk in front of the site – probably while it was going from the street into the site. I hope they plan on fixing it since that was only finished a couple of months ago.
In a just world, the 86 Warren developers would have to fill it in by Monday or face criminal charges. Or better: now forfeit their right to any permit to build, at least not without first paying new good faith, many-figured lump sums to both CB1 and the residents on either side of that lot. We all know nothing will happen to them otherwise. They’ll just wait out the stop work order and pay the relatively small DOB fines long the way to building whatever they want (it’s a few stories too high? Oops sorry!). That’s the business model.
