PESTICIDE-FREE BATTERY PARK CITY
CityLab gives a shout-out to Battery Park City Parks, which are and have been pesticide free for a while.

THIS YEAR’S CANDY HOT LIST
New York magazine’s The Strategist came to Tribeca to see what the cool parents give out for Halloween candy, and while I wasn’t tuned in enough to come up with Tony’s Chocolonely (with caramel and sea salt!!), at least I knew the full-size bar is a thing.

FLOATING BILLBOARD FIRST EDITION
Turns out the city’s fight against floating billboards first played out in 1939, when an “analog version” created by Fred Trump went up against Robert Moses. From The New Yorker: “For much of that summer and the one after it, Moses fought a pitched sea battle with a real-estate wheeler-dealer whose giant billboard boat was playing the shores of Coney Island and Brighton Beach. That man, not yet thirty-five years old, was already one of the biggest developers in Brooklyn. His son currently occupies the White House.”

RESILIENCY EFFORTS ARE LAGGING
Gotham Gazette has a three-part series on the status of the city’s resiliency efforts seven years after Sandy. And the report: nowhere. “Elected officials, advocacy groups, and other experts say a Sandy-caliber storm would be nearly if not just as devastating today as it was in 2012. The city and its partners at other levels of government have been far too slow to act, and have not moved with requisite boldness in considering how to truly prepare the five boroughs, with their 520 miles of coastline, for the present and the future.” And this as we enter hurricane season.
