In the News: Soho rezoning has critics

SOHO REZONING REPORT DISSED
amNY reports that more than a hundred people came to a CB2 Land Use Committee meeting last week to express their opposition to possible new development in Soho and Noho, all in reaction to the report commissioned by BP Gale Brewer, Councilwoman Chin and the Department of City Planning. (There were certainly plenty of public meetings leading up to the report.) I have not had the heart to dig into it yet, but will get to it. It’s here in the meantime.

‘HONKY TONK’ ON CHAMBERS STREET
The Patriot gets a mention in the Post’s round up of “country joints” that bring some “honky tonk” back to NYC, along with Dolly’s in Wmsbg and Waylon in Clinton. “There’s also Patriot Saloon (110 Chambers St.; 212-748-1162), an all-female bartender dive in Tribeca, and one of the few Manhattan bars where you can still find a beer for under $3.”

CHALLENGER TO YUH-LINE NIOU RAISING $$
City & State reports that Grace Lee, who is challenging Yuh-Line Niou for her assembly seat, is one of the bigger fundraisers in the city, with $155K in the bank so far, compared to Niou’s $118K. “Both candidates have raised money from donors big and small…Niou has a reputation as among the most left-leaning Democrats in the state Legislature. Lee is leaning on her past experience in business and activism to argue that she has a better feel for what local residents really want in an elected official.”

MOST EXPENSIVE RENTAL STREETS ARE HERE
Tribeca dominates StreetEasy’s latest report on the most expensive streets for rentals in the city, with Laight, Hudson, Warren, Washington and Lispenard taking honors. “The priciest rental stretch in all the nabe is Laight Street, where residential buildings had a median Rent Score of 9.81. This is reflected in the prices at 79 Laight, which has a median asking rent of $22,500 and a Rent Score of 9.9. Going by NYC’s typical 40-times-the-rent rule, you’d need to earn at least $900,000 per year to afford the average apartment there. Even the least-expensive rental building on Laight, at number 68, has a median asking rent of $6,650, meaning you’d need $266,000 per year to land an average 1-bedroom.”
