December 29, 2020 Restaurant/Bar News
Aroma Espresso Bar, the roomy lunch spot that opened on Church and Barclay in 2012, has decided to close its doors permanently for the obvious reasons. (Thanks to N. for the photos and tip.) The chain still has several other locations, though none in the city.
The company was founded in 1994 in Jerusalem and still has 25 restaurants in Israel (though at their peak they had 125 there). They opened their first US location in 2006 on Greene Street is Soho, and a few years later a second on 72nd Street. Both are now closed — 72nd in 2018 and Soho in 2016, after what Haaretz reported was a tripling of the rent from their Israeli landlords.
This news has me feeling a little queasy — like things are starting to snowball…

oh wow, i remember when aroma launched in the city. it was such a thing.
I am so sad! Such great people that work there and always so nice! LOVE their coffee and avocado toast! Will miss them! I do hope they come back soon the days when life gets back to normal!
I am sad to just be hearing about this! I haven’t visit NY in 2yrs but decided to finally come back for the 4th. I purposely chose a hotel in the Financial District just to have breakfast there and I am beyond hurt to hear that this place has closed. I have shared memories with friends and business partners at this location and i brought my mom with me to share this restaurant with her and it’s closed!! I have gone to several restaurants and have ordered a Chai Tea Latte and NO ONE makes it like Aroma, NO ONE! I got the same thing every time, Chai Tea Latte w/ an egg and cheese croissant 😢 I can’t believe i’m not having this for breakfast in the morning before my flight 😡 GREED will get you EVERY single time and I hope these landlords know that they made the BIGGEST mistake EVER! That place stayed busy and it was special to those who visited and lived in that area. smh. Money, it’s the root of ALL evil. Can i at least get the latte recipe tho?? Geesh! 😩😡😢😭
This “one day”… anybody knows it is coming? Any chance to get back Aroma in Tribeca?
It’s a franchise, so you could open one. There are only three in the US now, all in Miami.
