Seen & Heard: It’s the Epiphany

KING CAKE FOR THE HOLIDAY
This is well beyond my religious education, but since I always like an excuse to write about dessert, it turns out this is the time of the Epiphany, or Three Kings Day, or Twelfth Night — the feast that celebrates the visit of the magi to the Christ child. So since they are French, Maman has a king cake — a galette de rois — in two flavors to mark the occasion. And anyone who’s had the good luck to spend some time in New Orleans knows there’s a toy baked inside and whoever gets it in their slice is the king or queen for the day.

RESTORED WINDOWS AT 100 HUDSON
This is really getting into the architectural weeds, but if you love 100 Hudson as I do, you’ll be happy to hear that the new owners of the second floor apartment on the corner of Franklin have engaged Open Shop Architecture to restore the windows facing the street on both sides while installing air conditioners. The Landmarks Commission members were all but drooling during the presentation.

RUBBING SALT IN THE WOUND
H. told me that both Max and Edward’s had their outdoor dining structures trashed during the Christmas storms. Ugh. But they are both still open for takeout and delivery, and Edward’s is still seating folks outside.

ART AT NIGHT
The Seaport is hosting an photography show called Viewfinder that is best viewed at night — the windows of the former Corso Como space are papered with the photos and lit from behind. All the works presented have been shot throughout the past year at pivotal moments in the artists’ personal journeys.
