RALPH WALKER’S ART DECO BUILDINGS
Untapped Cities has a round-up of Ralph Walker’s Art Deco skyscrapers, including 100 Barclay, aka 140 West, aka the Barclay-Vesey Building that he designed for New York Telephone. “A 1925 New York Herald Tribune editorial expressed a widely held view, calling it ‘a beautiful composition in simple forms, and the pyramiding mass rising to the sky moves the spectator deeply.’ As for its lead designer, almost overnight Walker went from being an unknown architect to a famed partner in the renamed firm of Voorhees, Gmelin, and Walker.”
STRUCTURAL ENGINEER FOR WTC DIES AT 92
The Times has an obit of Leslie E. Robertson, the structural engineer of the World Trade Center, whose work came under intense scrutiny when the towers were destroyed on 9/11. “The responsibility for the design ultimately rested with me,” Mr. Robertson told The New York Times Magazine after the towers were destroyed. He added: “I have to ask myself, Should I have made the project more stalwart? And in retrospect, the only answer you can come up with is, Yes, you should have.”
MANHATTAN DA INVESTIGATING 40 WALL
The Journal reports that the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is investigating some $280 million in loans over eight years to four Donald Trump properties in Manhattan — Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, Trump International Hotel and Tower, Trump Plaza and 40 Wall Street. “Mr. Trump has called the probe a partisan ‘witch hunt’ led by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. , a Democrat. Mr. Trump’s lawyers have called the investigation a “fishing expedition” in Mr. Vance’s bid to get the former president’s tax returns.”
CAR FLIPS ON WEST STREET
The Trib has photos of the overturned car that flipped as it was driving up West Street on Saturday morning. The three passengers were taken to the hospital and some how no one else was hurt.
