The James hotel is now ModernHaus SoHo

The James hotel, which closed when everyone did back in March 2020, is now reopening as ModernHaus SoHo [sic on the Hs] on April 28. Looks like rooms will be about $500 a night. Thor Equities acquired the hotel in 2017 and in its reimagining, is calling the design a “tribute to Bauhaus.”

But there’s bigger news:

The hotel will include a restaurant called Veranda, with chef George Mendes installed. Mendes opened Aldea, the celebrated, Michelin-starred, Portuguese-inspired restaurant in the Flatiron, in 2009. He decided to close it on Feb. 24, 2020, which is some sort of crazy good luck (kinda sorta). And he started his career here, at Bouley, in 1992. He talks about two of his dishes with the CIA in the vid below.

There’s also Jimmy at ModernHaus on the roof on the 18th floor and Jumpin Jacks breakfast and cocktail bar. More TK when they open.

  1. This new re branding and ownership re opening will be interesting. I remember when The Jimmy on top of The James was the absolute it place to be. Good that he can open Veranda since he closed Aldea last spring.

  2. Good luck to them. Perhaps a positive sign of the times. But I can’t be the only person who thinks that name is awful.
