MONITORING WILDLIFE IN JAMAICA BAY
Tribecan Gail Karlsson currently has her photos of egrets from Jamaica Bay up at the windows of Western Union on West Broadway at Thomas until June 15. She is an environmental writer and photographer who recently began focusing on birds. Gail and her husband spent five summers going out to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge to observe egrets, herons and other wading birds as part of the NYC Audubon Society’s program Harbor Herons Shore Monitoring. “What surprised me was how much that experience changed my relationship to the city. I never really noticed birds before, but now I see them almost everywhere, including in my lower Manhattan neighborhood.”
DR SMOOD MIGHT STILL COME TO HUBERT
M. wrote to say that the Dr Smood location at Greenwich and Hubert had a for lease sign up, but the folks at the company said they are still trying to negotiate a lease with the landlord. “We are hopeful that a deal can be reached shortly.”
GWENN THOMAS AT API
Art Projects International has a show up now of Gwenn Thomas’ sculpture series Standard Candles — carefully proportioned wooden boxes inspired by Le Corbusier’s tabouret cabanon, a multipurpose stool that the Swiss architect designed in 1952 for his cabin in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. They also make reference to the astronomic concept of a “standard candle,” a celestial body of known luminosity that can be used to determine the distance of other stars. 434 Greenwich at Vestry.

I walked by the Egrets in the window today. They are beautiful photographs.
Congrats to Gail! These are beautiful! Met Gail in south BPC while birding last year – she was very nice.
