AUNTYLAND FILM FESTIVAL PREMIERS HERE
More on this soon, but in the meantime: Tribecan Sylvia Wong Lewis has founded the Auntyland Film Festival, which celebrates women and girls and the many roles they play in our world. Short films on any topic, not just aunties, are welcome including family, politics, sports, food, cooking, gardens, home, pets/animals, climate change, sustainability, LGBTQ themes, ‘Only in New York’ and more. “Filmmakers are encouraged to bring a bold realness that aunties bring,” Lewis said. The early bird deadline is Oct. 15; regular deadline is Jan. 30, 2022; and notification date: Feb. 24, 2022. The festival kicks off on International Women’s Day and runs through Women’s History Month: March 8 – March 31, 2022. More submission info here.

FREEMAN PLAZA EAST GETTING A FACELIFT
The park in the extra spaces around the Holland Tunnel entrance that is run by the Hudson Square BID is getting lush new plantings to protect the area from the tunnels, accessible pathways that lead to new tables and furnishings, decking islands made from recyclable materials, and free wifi. It should be finished late fall.

CON ED GOES GREEN
Con Ed added a couple street trees to the sidewalk outside its substation on West Broadway and Leonard today, which was a good effort on their part. Curious to see how they work with the de facto Fresh Direct warehouse that is usually on that block…

  1. It is the EMFs that kill those trees. They are too close to the substation. A thicker wall would not help. They need to be further from the station and not alot, a few feet could make a huge difference.
