Seen & Heard: Pushing for the Rotary Park

IMAGINING ST. JOHN’S PARK
The designers who have come up with a plan to turn the dead space in the center of the Holland Tunnel clover leaf have named it Rotary Park (though it isn’t actually a rotary, is it?) and have recently launched a website to support the project. Dasha Khapalova and Peter Ballman also hope to soon have the effort registered as a non-profit. The long-term goal is to build the park and in the short term, they are focused on doing temporary art installations  and playgrounds around the perimeter.

DOWNTOWN ALLIANCE LAUNCHES COMPOST PROGRAM
The Downtown Alliance has launched a drop-off composting program that uses smart bins that are accessible 24/7. The bins are unlocked by using a mobile app called eGate Digi (I guess if they were just open all the time, people would put other garbage in them?). This makes them distinct from the over 100 community composting sites currently operating in New York City, which are only open certain hours. See more here.

SOHO REP #1 FOR TIMEOUT NY
Soho Rep has been named “Best Theater in NYC” by Time Out Best of the City Awards 2021: “Soho Rep isn’t the last word in downtown experimental theater: Better than that, it’s often one of the first words, championing major voices at key points in their careers. Its astounding list of alums includes Richard Maxwell, Young Jean Lee, Adam Bock, Annie Baker, Nature Theater of Oklahoma, David Adjmi, Lucas Hnath, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, Anne Washburn, Aleshea Harris and Jackie Sibblies Drury (whose Fairview, which premiered there, won the Pulitzer Prize). And Soho Rep’s low ticket prices, including 99¢ Sundays, help keep some of the city’s bravest, boldest and wildest theater within the reach of all New Yorkers.”
