A new Citi Bike station lands on Hudson

Neighbor Robert Ripps happened to catch the installation of a new Citi Bike station on Hudson in front of Jin Market and I was so excited to see the photos — it was like seeing a baby pigeon. You know they exist, but who has ever caught sight of one?

This is the latest station in the neighborhood; the one on Duane Park was recently moved from in front of The Hideaway to the south side of Duane Park. Neighbors there really fought that one, but it *does* have the advantage of allowing The Hideaway and maybe — hopefully — Cafe Clementine a chance to develop the curbside space.

There was a persistent lack of docks open in the past months, but it seems to me — totally anecdotal here — that the logjam is loosening.

  1. they also added new citi bike to Washington Street by Laight St.

    • Like if parking isn’t already bad and the 100 dock station on Laight and Hudson wasn’t enough for citibank. They have to take the little bit of residential parking that was left. Its ridiculous smh

    • I cannot comprehend how the decision was made to add this many bikes on Laight & Washington. Within three blocks to the south, north and east there are other bike stations, two of which are massive in size. To take away almost an entire block of parking for bikes that the immediate neighborhood doesn’t need is patently ridiculous. I wish I knew which committee was responsible for this blunder…maybe we should be writing them letters…

  2. As someone who lives in the Powell Building..I find this heartbreaking.

    • Heartbreaking? Really? Good god people. Cycling is good and all the docks are used. I speak from daily experience.
I would circle back around on the heartbreak because there are plenty of other tragedies much more heartbreaking. Jeez.

  3. CITI is overtaking us. The beauty of TriBeCa is the tranquility. Introducing more docs will bring unwanted traffic, garbage, and late-night activity.
The racks would be better served to the riders when closer to the water where the real requirements exist.
I wonder who is driving the disruption of our beautiful enclave?

  4. Does anyone have advice on how to request Citi to remove the docks? New dock at Laight & Washington is unused (usually only 3 bikes docked out of 40 spots at any time of the day) and takes away important street parking and access to our building to move large items in. Citi bike docks are ruining Tribeca as it brings in unwanted traffic to an otherwise beautiful and quiet neighborhood!

  5. I have been in the neighborhood just short of 10 years. The management of our neighborhood by the City and specifically department of transportation is nothing but tragic. Our actions, even worse.

The neighborhood is a residential enclave, where 90% of the real estate is indeed residential. The parking regulation on 80% of the streets of Tribeca is “Truck Only” or “no parking at any time” or “no parking 8 to 6”.

This makes no sense whatsoever, and what hurts me the most is the resignation of the Tribeca citizens. Those, like me, willing and able to spend on a garage, accept the status quo, those who don’t have the luck of having a garage seem to be accepting their faith.

Restaurants took away a great chunk of parking, two additional citibike stations, one on Hudson one on Washington, completely useless, took away another 15 spots.
Continuous movie productions close out street parking on a weekly basis.

    Nobody says a word.

On top of this, NYC is the only city I’ve lived (Milan, London, Geneva, Vienna among others) that does not provide its (high tax paying) citizens for “residents only parking”, one of the most basic rights. Instead every morning 8am we assist to a fight between spoiled workers coming from out of town and a variety of different “commercial vehicles”.

I encourage this community to get together, to raise the issue as high as possible with the department of transportation and to propose to become the first experimental neighborhood for licensed residents’ parking tags. Change is always possible, but it doesn’t happen by accident.

I hope the admins of TC will reach out and initiate a motion through this community.

  6. The Citibike project, and the location of these docks, has been a topic at the CB1 Transportation Committee for the past two months. Meetings are still being held online. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/manhattancb1/index.page
Please come to the transportation board committee meeting, join the discussion, and voice your concerns/proposals.

  7. Tell that to the families who need can’t put their kids on bikes and need a family vehicle to get around. Now the garages around are seeing this and are rising prices. I get that biking promotes exercise but when the Citibank building is 2 blocks away with already 2 large stations and another literal 100 bike docking station on Laight and Hudson already. When is enough enough?
