This news makes me wish I had a dog.
Governors Island is now allowing dogs to ride the ferry for the winter months starting tomorrow. But there’s a catch: they are only allowed out on Saturdays between 7a and 3p. Seems they should be more liberal with the hours and the days — and maybe things will loosen up after this trial period?
Dogs must be leashed on the island — but there is a fenced in dog run behind Liggett Terrace where they can be unleashed.
The city also just announced that there will be NYC Ferry service daily to the island from Pier 11 at the Seaport in addition to the Governors Island Ferry at the Battery Maritime Building. The South Brooklyn route, which originates at Corlears Hook and includes a stop at Pier 11, will stop at the Yankee Pier on the east side of the island in between stops in Red Hook and Sunset Park. Check out that schedule here and see the route below.
The winter village is open till the end of February.
I’ve always wanted to meet the island’s working dogs — that’s the newest member of the pack, Leader, above. They chase geese for a living.
