Washington Market Park lawn will get a garden to help drainage

The sod is being rolled out in the park this week for the first time in three years,

And to help with the drainage issues on the lawn, the Parks Department is installing a garden area on the west side of the lawn. The plant species will include Buttonbush and Joe-Pye Weed (see below) and I assume will have some sort of low fencing to keep kids (and adults too) out of the area.

The park is usually sodded every spring — it will be closed for two months so the sod can knit. But in March 2020 as we know all operations were shut down, and in spring 2021, the Parks Department didn’t want to close the lawn since so many schools and daycares were using it to get kids outside more.

The drainage issues were in full bloom last September after a big rain.

  1. the park has always had serious drainage issues. it was essentially a lake after superstorm sandy. i’m out late at night frequently and i often notice the sprinkler system is running while the lawn is flooded. somebody really should take a serious look at the whole setup there.
