Seen & Heard: New office for our councilmember

MARTE OPENS OFFICE ON EAST BROADWAY
The new councilmember, Christopher Marte, has gone old school and opened a real storefront council office at 65 East Broadway (Catherine and Market) in Chinatown. The hours will be weekdays 10a to 6p.

BEACH PARTY AT CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF THE ARTS
The Children’s Museum of the Arts will host a Beach Block Party on Sunday, June 26, from noon to 3p, at Spring Street Park on Sixth Avenue in Soho (the triangle near Trader Joe’s). There will be summer arts & crafts like kid’s caricatures, a crustacean station, and briny watercolors plus volleyball courts. Through donations and merchandise sales, the even also raises money for arts education. Evite here.

MORE ON THE NEW MEXICAN ON GREENWICH
Putting a name to a face: The new Mexican on Greenwich and N. Moore will be called Caliza Mezcal Y Cucina, and will feature a mezcal and tequila program. (And I believe also an ice cream shop!) They are also building a substantial outdoor cafe on the N. Moore side, since as we now know from Cocoon, half of those broad sidewalks in front of IPN are part of the leasehold. The architect is Glen Coben, who did Batard and Del Posto among many others. The ambiance will be “Tulum-meets-Manhattan.”

ART IN TRIBECA HAD AN EXPIRATION DATE
I was surprised to see that the sculpture by Manuel Ferreiro Badia on the point of Finn Square was removed (maybe it has been for a while?) — I miss it. It was only supposed to be up till February 2021, according to my own post on it in Feb 2020, but in my head I thought it was permanent… I hope Parks installs something new there…

  1. quite the Mexican explosion taking place in Tribeca! 4/5 places in 2022 and we’re not yet halfway through the year.

  2. So far none of the new Mexican restaurants lives up to Lupe’s East L.A. Kitchen on Sixth Avenue and Broome in SoHo. I grew up in Los Angeles and this old-school and charming has muy delicioso comida that is authentic. But I will try all of the Tribeca places to see how they stack up!

  3. I so agree with Donna, Lupes tastes like the Mexico I love.

  4. I think the new restaurants are wonderful. Casa Carmen, Fonda and Chela are all great. Great food, great atmosphere, and all with a different spin on Mexican cuisine. I love that they are here.

  5. casa carmen is a treat.. the octopus tacos are a must
