I wanted to see who spent what in this campaign for the 10th Congressional seat. And in total, they spent a lot. Federal Election Commission reportings as of August 3 had Mondaire Jones and Dan Goldman pretty much neck and neck with $3.5 million in total receipts.
But on August 11, Goldman added $2.2 million (putting his total at $5.7 million) to his campaign and Jones received another $250,000, which explains why you got so many flyers this month. (I have to note that none of the leading candidates spent any of that money advertising on the TC — so much for support of local journalism!) Yuh-Line Niou, who lost by 1300 votes and 2 percentage points to Goldman, raised just over $600,000.
Here’s the rundown from the FEC as of August 3:
JONES, MONDAIRE……….. $3,567,285.18
GOLDMAN, DANIEL………..$3,442,134.49
RIVERA, CARLINA ………….$637,513.82
DE BLASIO, BILL …………….$559,857.26
NIOU, YUH-LINE …………….$427,904.91
SIMON, JO ANNE ……………$262,091.00
ROBINSON, BRIAN …………$231,321.71
KIM, ELIZABETH ……………$229,375.72
HOLTZMAN, ELIZABETH .$226,930.75
MARON, MAUD ………………$101,965.50
There were some super PACs at work as well: The Intercept notes, in a story titled “Multimillionaire self-funder foisted on NY10 voters,” that AIPAC, the Israel super PAC, took partial credit for Niou’s defeat, and the City & State reported that a dark money super PAC, which they guessed is supported by real estate interests, also sent out flyers to discredit her. Another Latino super PAC supported Carlina Rivera, Overall there was $9 million in spending by super PACS in the city’s congressional primaries, including Jerry Nadler’s vs. Carolyn Maloney.
