Seen & Heard: It’s mooncake season

MOONCAKE SEASON IS HERE
It’s the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival, or Mooncake Festival, time of year, and in Chinatown it’s being celebrated on Saturday, Sept. 10. Eater has a list of inventive fresh mooncakes, Pearl River has a few left and Po Wing Hong Food Market on Elizabeth has a big selection.

LANTERN FLIES ARE ON THE MOVE
I have had so many emails about the dreaded and spotted lantern fly — and truly, they are everywhere. Last night on our way to the Oculus from the train we must have seen more than a hundred squashed on the sidewalk. So here’s another PSA: if you see one, kill it. Lanternflies, a new invasive species, feed on sap and secrete a sticky substance that can encourage the growth of black mold. Weaker or stressed trees are more likely to catch disease and become infested by other insects as a result.

MORE PROTESTS AT WAGNER TODAY
The Save Wagner group that is fighting the resiliency plans that will rebuild Wagner Park is holding another protest today, Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 5p in the park. Find more info here.

LAST CALL FOR GIGINO AT WAGNER
And more on that: Gigino’s Wagner Park outpost has closed for the foreseeable future as of Monday. They have been there since 1999. The reconstructed pavilion will have space for another restaurant, but of course that is two years away and my guess is the BPCA would have to do a formal RFP, unless they can promise it now to Gigino…
