Even Rosie Negron herself isn’t sure why kids like coming to her for cuts — she just knows they do, and clearly the feeling is mutual. She’s been cutting children’s hair for 35 years, and she still loves her job.
“I guess I just love kids,” says Rosie, who has taken a room in the back of the new toy store Two Kids and a Dog on Greenwich — right across from Whole Foods — as her first-even salon on her own, Rosie’s Kids Cuts. “And this space is like my dream.”
Rosie started cutting kids’ locks in the ’80s at Cozy’s Cuts for Kids on the Upper East Side, then moved to Lulu’s Cuts & Toys in Park Slope, where she worked for 13 years. All that time she also made house calls, and during the pandemic, when salons were closed, that rose to a new level. “I was cutting hair on rooftops, sidewalks, doorways, you name it.”
It was during that time that her daughter (she raised her girls in Queens as a single mom — they are now 28 and 30 and she has five grandkids) insisted she open her own shop, and she imagined a space within a space, so she started calling, walking around Tribeca and Fidi, burning up the shoe-leather. She was just about spent from asking when she popped into Two Kids; owner Natalia Jacobs called back the next day and they made a deal.
Her backroom space is big enough for two chairs (well, one is a fire engine), and since the store used to be Poke Green, it came equipped with water and a sink. She enlisted the help of her longtime friend Andrea Salas, now a partner in the business, who has spent 20 years in children’s retail, to stock the salon with hair accoutrement and handle the décor.
There’s more to come: packages, spa days with manicures and maybe a face mask for a child and his or her friend, and updos for special occasions, of course. And she works with kids of any age, birth and up. (One chair is equipped with a baby seat that has a toy station attached, and both chairs have screens and/or bubbles as a distraction.)
It’s Andrea who puts her finger on Rosie’s knack with kids: “She treats them like they are adults going to the salon,” she says. “And she speaks their language. She’s hop on all the shows, the video games. It’s just really cute.”
