Rite Aid in Brookfield is closing

N. and J. wrote to say that the workers at the Rite Aid in Brookfield said the store is closing — and the photographic evidence N. sent seems to back that up. And the folks from Brookfield confirmed it:

“While we are saddened by Rite Aid’s decision to close retail locations, we are working diligently to find a solution to meet the needs of our local community in Lower Manhattan.”

They have restricted the hours in the meantime. And the company is closing other city locations along with this one. The Post reported that Rite Aid has lost $5 million in “shrink” — the industry term for shoplifting losses. “I think the headline here is the environment that we operate in, particularly in New York City, is not conducive to reducing shrink just based upon everything you read and see on social media and the news in the city,” the chief retail officer told The Post. Harsh.

  1. And yet Walgreens/Duane Reade has 12 locations in FiDi/Tribeca and CVS, which had just one location until recently, has opened two new ones in the last couple of months. The reality is that Rite-Aid has been reducing its footprint in the city for years. Maybe CVS can take this spot over, as it’s a shame that BPC doesn’t have any other options, where FiDi and Tribeca have many. The Oculus Walgreens has a Pharmacy.

  2. I’ve seen 5 of them close
Because of shoplifting we’ll be going back to mom & pops soon

    • Walgreens/Duane Reade has two outlets in the Oculus and one of them (right at the PATH entrance) has a pharmacy and can be accessed from the old Rite Aid at Brookfield Place without ever stepping outside.

  3. Unfortunate as I recall countless times that I was saved having needed emergency bandaids, greeting cards, snacks, and all sorts of random bits. True, R/A seems to be reducing its footprint across the city and it hasn’t had as much foot traffic as did pre-C. Can’t imagine the rent is cheap either. Sad to see it go and I hope something worthwhile takes the space instead of being a ghost corridor.

  4. Shoplifting is out of control, not just the teeny bopper stealing a soda. I’ve been in Rite Aids where they jump the counter to pharmacy, 4 times. Organized crime comes in- fills up a shopping cart, goes out the fire exit, picks up the cart and shoves the whole thing in their van- over 6 times. Or rams a car through the front window to steal cigarettes. Or yanks the ATM out of the front window….3 times that I know of. Sorry your neighborhood store is closing. It’s just not safe for the employees or customers.

    • No offense, but if you’re in Seattle, stick to your own neighborhood.

And, these reasons for closing are all conjecture. Brookfield Place is a mall. A high-end mall at that. Anyone familiar with malls in our area knows that not a single one has a drug store in it. Why, bc we have drugstores on almost every other corner. That Rite Aid was always empty, so it’s not a shock it’s closing.

Now, to address this Covid crime spree apocalypse. CVS, Rite Aid, Duane Reade, etc aren’t mom & pops that are being driven out of business by gangs of thieves. That’s some Fox News, migrant caravan bs. These companies are reporting quarterly earnings beating expectations. So clearly, they’re somehow managing to “survive” despite all the Mach3 blades getting stolen.
So, stop with this dumb narrative. The country is moving on. Nothing is that bad. If you think it’s bad here, go to other countries and see how the pandemic affected them.

      Good evening.

  5. Soon these stores will have to put all products…and staff…behind bulletproof glass, like some liquor stores do. Or they will simply move all retail online.

    • Have you been to the Duane Reade on Greenwich lately? It seems half the items are already under lock & key- I understand doing that for expensive medical devices, but toothpaste?

  6. Sad especially for the over 70 age group in south Battery Park city. The BPC pharmacy was closed and now Rite Aid. The duane reade in north BPC is too far too walk with a walker. P

The luxury stores in Brookfield pay no rent but the stores that benefit the community suffer rent hikes.

The gristedes/Sloan closed as well as Picasso pizza and the liquor store this month due to increased rents.
    Now rite aid.

Gateway lost stabilization. The now elderly community which built the community back after 9/11 are being pushed out due to increased rents and lack of services.

  7. This particular store didn’t have many burglaries going on, very peaceful upper-middle-class neighborhood. I’m guessing it was mainly not enough business. The other newer pharmacies in the Oculus are smaller and busier, mainly just because more people walk by them. But as others noted, now we have no pharmacies south of Brookfield Place. It’s a real shame as they always had Ben and Jerry’s on sale….
Curiously it says all prescriptions are being sent to a Duane Reade

  8. To all the people that are on here Commenting; You are free to give an opinion; BUT; I formerly worked at this store; I worked here from November 2020 until December 2021; and I will just tell you that the store did in fact have multiple burglaries that occurred, along with constant shoplifting. Furthermore; Not only did the store lose money by the company prohibiting employees from being able to stop the shoplifters; (obviously for their protection), But the company was already dealing with financial issues anyway because of the competitor Amazon. Company owes over millions to contractors and vendors; in which they can’t pay. Moving along; The employees at this location were very unappreciated by the public. The employees literally left their houses daily; especially during a pandemic and risking their safety; only just to deal with entitled white people that were privileged who shopped in this location; that would walk in there and thought it was OK to argue with employees over prices and store ads; Speak to the employees any kind of way that they wanted and expected their asses to be kissed. So; I will say that in a way I’m glad the store closed. To anybody that came to the store being disrespectful and disruptive; you have no idea how bad the employees probably wanted to smack you. As messed up as it is that people lost their jobs; that’s one less store that is open for employees to have to be exposed to rude people.
