In the News: Art advisor is sued, closes Tribeca showroom

ART ADVISOR CLOSES TRIBECA SHOWROOM
Artnet reports that prominent art advisor Lisa Schiff, whose showroom/office was at 45 White since 2018, has been sued by two clients; the second suit alleges that she embezzled nearly $3 million. There are several stories (thanks to P. for this latest): see The Art Newspaper on suit #1, and more from Artnet here.

MORE ON COURT TIME BROKERING IN WMP
The Post picked up my story on the shenanigans going on at the Washington Market Park tennis court, where folks are selling court times on Craigslist and pros are signing up for multiple spots. Unbeknownst to the reporters, they even interviewed one of the pros!

A REFLECTION ON RAFAEL VINOLY
ICYMI, the architect David Rockwell has a lovely tribute in the Times to Tribecan Rafael Viñoly, who died suddenly in early March. “There is something transcendent about the architect’s spaces: something unseeable that you experience when you enter. They are as fluid as music.”

THE LIQUOR STORE AS RETAIL SECRET WEAPON
GQ has the story on how former Tribecan Mickey Drexler came to open a J. Crew menswear shop at 2 White in 2008: “Jack Spade took Mickey and [Todd] Snyder on a field trip. He knew just the spot, he said: a tiny, grimy out-of-work bar on a crooked corner in Tribeca. The original bar was still intact, down to the bourbon bottles, and the little neon sign in the window: Liquor Store. Even the old cash register was still there. ‘It was a no-brainer,’ Snyder says.” When J. Crew left, Snyder took the store for his own eponymous brand.

  1. The second floor of Liquor Store was my go to travel agent in the early 90’s

    • Gwen: Yes. Aloft Travel. And “aloft,” in the 1980s, and in this case, had a double meaning. A wonderful guy owned it. He also had the theater across the street. A hard-working hippie-era downtowner. He made his fortune by selling that theater to someone who built a mansion on top, on the southwest corner of N. Moore and W. Broadway. Alas, shortly thereafter, he was hiking with his son, fell off a mountaintop, and died.

  2. i love how gq spins it as a “grimy out-of-work bar.” liquor store was a very popular hip bar that closed unexpectedly and sat for some months before mickey drexler converted it.
