Momofuku Ssäm Bar at the Seaport will close

Momofuku Ssäm Bar, David Chang’s restaurant at Pier 17, is closing on Sept. 30. He announced the news on the restaurant’s Instagram.

Chang first opened Bar Wayō in that space in October 2019, on the ground floor of Pier 17. Of all the spaces there, I thought it was the most warm and friendly and least corporate feeling (but maybe because it was also the smallest). Two years later, in October 2021, Chang repurposed the space as the Ssäm Bar, which the restaurateur moved from the East Village. It opened originally in 2006.

“We will always be grateful for the teams past and present who made Ssäm Bar such a special restaurant over the past 17 years,” Chang wrote on the IG post. “It is hard to overstate the impact Ssäm Bar had on Momofuku and beyond. Ssäm Bar is where we made our first Bo Ssäms and ducks and and met so many people who remain part of the Momofuku family to this day.

“We believe in using food as a way to connect, start conversations and challenge the status-quo. That ethos was true at Ssäm Bar from the very first day at 207 2nd Avenue and will live on in everything we do across the Momoverse far into the future.”

Momofuku as a restaurant group still has Ko, two Noodle Bars and Bāng Bar, as well as locations in California and Las Vegas.
