Tribeca’s own Frenchette Bakery, the outpost of the restaurant on West Broadway, which opened in 2020 in the former Arcade Bakery space, will open soon (two weeks or so, one guard thought?) in the ground-floor cafe space at the Whitney. The space was originally Untitled (get it?), created by Danny Meyer; that restaurant closed in early 2021.
Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group opened Untitled there in 2011, and it was meant to be a contemporary take on the classic Manhattan coffee shop from the executive sous chef of Gramercy Tavern. The restaurant closed temporarily at the start of the pandemic, but never reopened. It then closed permanently in March 2021, and Eater reported that a pop-up called the Whitney Cafe would replace it with a grab-and-go concept: “For now, at least, we’ve concluded that what museum guests and the broader Meatpacking neighborhood really wants is a quick and casual dining experience,” USHG CEO Danny Meyer said in a statement.
That sounds like a good fit for Frenchette Bakery, which now has the most fabulous Murphy Bed-esque seating for its pizzas, breads and pastries on Church. I hope they also are operating the upstairs cafe, which I always liked best.
