SWIMMER RESCUED FROM STORM DRAIN OFF PIER 26
The Citizen app had the audio of the NYPD and the FDNY responding to a man caught in the storm drain off Pier 26 starting at 7:18 this morning and a few minutes later they had him on land. It seems he went swimming close to midnight and had been stuck that whole time. The Trib caught pictures of him, standing in his underwear, as he waited to get a lift in the ambulance. The storm drains run along the bulkhead, so he must have swum from the pier toward the shore, hoping for a ladder?
TRIBECAN’S WEAVING JOURNEY THROUGH MALI
Tribecan and artist Janet Goldner will present an immersive installation combining photographs and text amassed over many years in Mali at the Carter Burden Gallery on West 28th Street. Beginning in 1973 with a three-month sojourn in Ghana as part of a study abroad program, Goldner’s journey led her through West Africa, with Mali being the heart of her time there. She returned to Mali in 1995 as a Fulbright Scholar, where she forged a deep connection with local potters, metalsmiths and contemporary artists. Since then, several months out of almost every year the artist travels back, where she continues the dialogue with Malian artists about their lives, work and creative process. More info here.
ADOPT A STREET TREE
Councilman Christopher Marte has created an “Adopt a Tree” program and map for the district since the Parks Department stops caring for street trees once they turn 2 years old. The tool will allow his office to track which trees need care, and help residents contribute to help maintain them. See the map here.
BPCA ELECTS NEW CHAIRMAN
The board of the Battery Park City Authority has elected Donald Capoccia, the founder of BFC Partners, a real estate development company that has been involved construction of some 12,500 units of housing in the city, was elected to serve as chair. He’s been on the board since 2011. The position has been open since the former chair, George Tsunis, was picked to serve as the American ambassador to Greece.
I’ve always wondered how I’d get out of the Hudson if I somehow fell or was pushed in. I guess the answer is I wouldn’t. Seems like an obvious safety concern that should be addressed.
Swim to a nearby floating boat dock? Wait for high tide…?
Janet Goldner’s installation “Woven Journey” will be on view through December 20, 2023!
