I am a little late with this one, but I still wanted to acknowledge the Friends of Washington Market Park’s efforts around Halloween: the annual Halloween Parade, held on Sunday, might be the oldest tradition in the neighborhood. And while it got washed out this time around, the Queer Big Apple Corps. marching band always brings it, performing this time on the loading bay of Tribeca Grill.
And the 9th Annual Pumpkin Carving Contest had 94 entries with winners across five categories. The overall winner: Encounter: a multi-pumpkin astronaut and his green friend in a pumpkin spaceship. Check out the Friends’ instagram for the winners.
Judging this year: Councilman Chris Marte; PS 150 principal Nico Victorino; Rachel Cantor of Dance with Miss Rachel; Karie Parker Davidson from Friends of Duane Park; Ralph Musolino, deputy chief of operations for the Parks Department; and Brandon Sines, aka Frank Ape, who decorated the park’s picnic tables this year. It was an all-star line-up.
Plus it is so fun to be in the park after dark.
I love the pumpkin carving contest- it is a great new neighborhood tradition!
