PLAYGARDEN PREP ADDS SPANISH IMMERSION PROGRAM
Playgarden Prep, the preschool at 95 Franklin, will add an English-Spanish immersion program for students ages 12 months to 6 years old starting this September. The school has partnered with European early childhood education institution Arenales Red Educativa to provide the program, which to start will be four days a week taught half in English, half in Spanish by native Spanish-speaking teachers. The Spanish Chamber of Commerce will also sponsor a group of teachers from Spain to join the teaching staff at Playgarden Prep. See more information here.
CHEF TALK: DENZELL WASHINGTON
Chef Denzell Washington, a culinary history expert, winner of Food Network’s Chopped and Harlem native, will be giving a talk and preparing an amuse bouche for the audience on Thursday, Feb. 15, 6:30 – 8p at 6 River Terrace. Washington will discuss how his background has informed the chef he is today and his goal to be a symbol of hope for Black people aspiring for success within the food industry. The dish will feature baby lima beans and smoked turkey as an homage to his grandfather and southern cuisine. More info here.
HOLY TERRORS AND MONSTERS AT GALERIE56
Tribecan Lee Mindel’s Galerie56 at 56 Leonard has a new show up — “Les Enfants Terribles,” which explores the work of the “holy terrors” of 20th-century design in France, on view through April 19. The show will be the backdrop for a Valentine’s Day book signing at 6 to 8p for Aaron Betsky’s new book “The Monster Leviathan: Anarchitecture” (MIT Press). A highly regarded American critic of art, architecture, and design, Betsky will be on hand to chat with guests about his book, which explores unseen architecture (or anarchitecture). More info here.
LUNAR NEW YEAR AT THE OCULUS
There are a bunch of performances going on at the Oculus starting Friday, Feb. 9, through Sunday, Feb. 18, to celebrate Chinese New Year. There’s a a Chinese Drum Performance Friday at 2; Electronic Music Sunday, Feb. 11, at 4 and 6; traditional music on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 1p; and more traditional performances by the New York Chinese Cultural Center on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 2p.
