THE HISTORY AND LEGACY OF THE SIDEWALK SHED
The Times takes a look at the more than 8,500 sidewalk sheds in the city — “End to end, they would stretch from Manhattan to Montreal.” And they look back on how it all started: “…regulations spurred by the death of a Barnard College freshman in 1979. The student, Grace Gold, was just 17 when she was killed by a chunk of masonry that fell from a building on Broadway north of 115th Street. Laws enacted in the wake of that tragedy mandated periodic inspection of the facades of buildings taller than six stories. Conducting those inspections requires the erection of scaffolding and protections for people on the surrounding streets and sidewalks.”
PUTTING THE BEEF IN BEEFBAR
Grub Street restaurant critics evaluate Beefbar, the new restaurant in the old Nobu space: “The menu kind of goes in two directions. There’s what is essentially a classic steakhouse menu, and then there’s a kind of beef wonderland of appetizers and entrée preparations, some of which are canonically made with beef and others which…aren’t. Beef bacon, beef bao buns, beef gyoza. Anywhere that another meat might have been expected, beef was substituted.”
ARRESTS FOR EARTH WEEK
Climate protestors have been active at Citi headquarters all week, and ABC News reported that there were a bunch of arrests after demonstrators blocked the entrances to the bank. “Activists were full of passion as they raised their voices, chanted and beat drums. A number of them held a large sign outside that said, ‘Stop funding fossil fuels.'”
PAROLEE ARRESTED FOR RAPE IN SOHO
The Post reports that a man with a lengthy rap sheet was arrested Tuesday for allegedly raping a woman after he followed her inside her Soho apartment building, police and law enforcement sources said. From The Post: “Ellow Williams, 30, was picked up by the US Marshals Fugitive Task Force on the Lower East Side and charged over the disturbing weekend attack on a 23-year-old victim, police and sources said. Williams allegedly threatened to shoot the woman after he covertly followed her into the building shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday, police said.”
