Where to watch the July 4th fireworks

Kent Miller for Macy’s Inc.

With the Macy’s 4th of July fireworks on the Westside again for the first time in 11 years (and it will be here for the next two years as well, leading up to the whopper, 2026), the NYPD is planning to close the Hudson River Park piers for the day and the park starting at 3p. The fireworks will be launched off barges in the river between 14th and 34th streets starting at around 9:25p.

CLOSINGS

  • The Westside Highway — from Canal to 79th Street — will close from 3p to 1a.
  • Hudson River Park will close entirely at 3p.
  • In Tribeca, Piers 25, 26 and 34 will be closed starting at 6a.
  • The esplanade, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts and dog parks on the park’s upland areas will be open until 3p. After 3, those areas too will be closed by the NYPD for safety. More info directly from the park here.

WHERE TO WATCH
Since the highway will be closed, you should be able to watch from there, but the Macy’s site recommends north of Houston.
There are official viewing areas that are on the map above:

  • Christopher & Washington
  • Weet 11th & Washington
  • West 12th & Washington
  • West 29th & 11th Ave.
  • West 40th & 11th Ave.
  • West 41st & 11th Ave.

Rockefeller Park will be fully open, however — just the Irish Hunger Memorial is closing at 7p. So that might be the best viewing area. Of course those of you with rooftops are set…

  1. As an alternative, we always watch the Jersey City fireworks from the area in front of PJ Clarkes. It’s a good show and not too crowded!

    • Absolutely was disappointed with the Macy’s 4th of July show. Too much focus on singers. I wanted to see the fireworks. After all, that is what should have been the main focus. Instead I mostly saw performers on stage and poor camera coverage of fireworks. So sad!!

      • At least you could see fireworks, we were in the city and could only see a quarter of a firework. All of us were highly disappointed!!! NYPD closed the roads with the best views so no one could be close to even see the fireworks. It was the worst July 4th celebration I’ve ever been to.
