Fourth victim of Corlears Hook crash donated organs to four patients

I didn’t cover the horrible, horrible story of the July 4th crash in Corlears Hook Park, since it was well covered and it’s not in the neighborhood, but this was a remarkable follow up that I thought was worth mentioning — I haven’t seen it in the dailies.

Downtowner Emily Ruiz died from her injuries last Tuesday, five days after 44-year-old Daniel Hyden allegedly lost control of his truck and careened into the crowds. The organization LiveOnNY, which oversees and coordinates organ donation in the greater New York Metro area, just confirmed that Ruiz was a registered donor, and as a result, her heart, lungs and kidneys were donated to four patients. They ranged in age from 50 to 70 years old and lived in New York and Florida, the organization said.

Gothamist reported that Ruiz, 30, spent five days in critical condition at Bellevue. She lived across the street from the park in the Vladeck Houses and was the mother of a 6-year-old son. She was the fourth victim of the crash, Gothamist said: “Lucille Pinkney, 59, and Hernan Pinkney, 38, were killed immediately at the scene. The third person, 43-year-old Ana Morel, died at Bellevue Hospital the next day.

“Hyden, of Monmouth Junction, NJ, was charged with vehicular homicide, eight counts of assault, three counts of driving while intoxicated and one count of ‘aggravated unlicensed operator,’ or driving with a suspended or revoked license. He was arraigned Saturday in Manhattan Criminal Court, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges, and was ordered held without bail.”
