Catching Up With New Kids: Bode

I mentioned this on Instagram but never got around to making them an official New Kid: Bode, the one-of-a-kind luxury fashion brand out of the Lower East Side, opened a shop on Worth last November, showcasing its women’s collection including daywear, eveningwear, lingerie, handbags, jewelry, shoes, and clothing made from vintage and antique textiles. This is their fourth shop in the city; they also three stores in a row on Hester: men’s, shoes store and “one-of-a-kind;” tailoring on Canal; and a shop in LA.

Emily Adams Bode Aujla (Bode is her maiden name) founded the brand in 2016 as a series of menswear pieces made from vintage textiles. Three years later she was named Emerging Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, chaired by Thom Browne, and continued to win awards from Forbes, GQ and other design organizations. She was the first woman to show at New York Fashion Week in the men’s department,

She is married to interior designer Aaron Aujla, cofounder of Green River Project, which designs her store interiors — and their homes. (The couple lived in Chinatown until recently, when they had their first child and moved to the West Village. See that home here.)

The clothing is all new — and all reimagined from its original self. For instance, a dress in the shop was once a Mexican shawl. And some new fabrics take on a vintage feel through their design. The Gilded Rose Top on the website now ($780) is handmade from deadstock yardage and finished with a pearl button sourced from a now-defunct button factory in Iowa. The ready-to-wear Sandbank tee ($310) was inspired by an actual shirt from the 1960s; Bode reproduced the fabric in cotton from Portugal to create the look.

Her focus is on craft, connection and preservation — not just of the fabric itself, but of technique and quality.

“My husband and I work quite seamlessly between making our home and making pieces and the identity for Bode,” she told Sotheby’s in a Q&A. “Like our approach to our home, our work is hyperpersonal, rooted in reflection and historical narrative, and made to be cherished.”
