New Kid on the Block: Laura Gonzalez

French interior designer Laura Gonzalez has opened her first showroom in the US on Franklin, adding to the Tribeca Design District. (This was the former Jason Scott space, and it’s deep and sunny.)

Gonzalez, also a trained architect, is known for her ability to mix patterns, materials and styles and furniture, what she called “a form of classicism imbued with romanticism.”

She’s worked on more than 100 projects in the past decade, including Paris landmarks La Pérouse and the Saint James Hotel, and she is working currently on the first New York location of the Parisian department store Printemps, opening at One Wall Street next spring. This past fall, she released a coffee table book of her work.

She often connects fashion and design worlds, she told WWD in an interview last October. “She praised Pharrell’s Louis Vuitton debut from June for using the Pont Neuf bridge. ‘Fashion shows are being reinvented,’ she said. ‘We have a lot of beauty everywhere, so let’s use the beauty we have and be creative and smart. She works with a source that rescues materials from fashion shows that she can reuse and upcycle. For example, the furniture in the playroom at Printemps will be made out of upcycled fashion show leftovers.”
