The jails on White and Centre are just about gone

The city has successfully torn down two giant jails on White Street so they can build a more giant jail there and close a giant jail on Riker’s Island sometime soon.

It’s infuriating, depressing and makes you lose faith in government if you haven’t already, and it’s done. I’ve included an illustration from Neighbors United Below Canal just to remind you what was there originally.

The northern-most jail, The Tombs, is now gone — all that’s left is an empty lot with a pile of rubble. The southern building is down to about three stories from its original 19 or so.

The last I emailed with the city — a year ago August — there were no plans for the buildings yet. Awaiting word for an update…

The new jail is expected to be 295 feet tall max, with 1.25 million square feet, which is smaller than the original plan of 450 feet. And the whole thing — with borough-based jails in Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx as well — will cost for starters $9 billion.

  1. Agree with Pam’s words. What a huge waste of money and negative impact for chinatown community. There are so many problems with NYC which readers discuss all the time – crime, homelessness, educational outcomes and fiscal imbalances – yet politicians do things like this.

  2. The joke would be on thug boss Eric if he ends up in this mega jail. Karma!

  3. Disaster. Incredible waste of money, with no evidence that it will actually solve the problems that it was intended to solve. Probably will just move the problems from Rikers to here.

  4. Huge waste, makes zero sense, logistical nightmare.

There is actual land on Rikers that could be used to build a humane, therapeutic facility with proper medical/mental health/rehab/rec space/green space. The new facility will be overcrowded and won’t have green space.

Defendants are housed where crime committed so people won’t necessarily be closer to their families. City could have just implemented free family shuttle buse to Rikers.

Women will all be housed in Queens anyway.

Now Elmhurst is used for Rikers. With borough jails, each borough will need a designated hospital.

Many COs live far away and also have double shifts and drive. They can park at Rikers. How will they park in Manhattan? Or other boroughs.
