Blue Smoke will close in December

Francesco Sapienza

Blue Smoke, Danny Meyer’s barbecue restaurant that has been on Vesey in Battery Park City since 2012, will close at the end of the year. This is of course a big loss for the neighborhoods.

Our location was a satellite of the original Blue Smoke in the Flatiron, which opened in in 2002 and permanently closed in 2020 due to the pandemic. The restaurant, part of Meyer’s constellation under the Union Square Hospitality Group umbrella, helped shape the urban barbecue scene in the city through national annual events like the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in Madison Square Park.

The communications staff for the group said they will be open through the end of the year and will host a series of events to close out the restaurant “in celebratory style.”

And, they added, “although there are no immediate plans for a new location, we remain hopeful for Blue Smoke’s future revival.”

Union Square Hospitality Group will also offer team members opportunities to explore roles within the larger company.

  1. Harry’s and Blue Smoke both gone with greedy Goldman as landlord

If two corporate backed behemoth chains cannot survive here, what makes them think a) any other restaurant group can b) a lesser known entity with less $$$ backing them will also be able to?!

    • Do you know for a fact that the landlord is to blame? My guess is you don’t. Harry’s has had all sorts of financial difficulties, so it is not a surprise that they closed that location. And Danny Meyer says that the original Blue Smoke in Flatiron closed during Covid. Is that greedy Goldman’s fault too? The fact is maybe their lease was up and these restaurants weren’t making enough or the owners want to put their resources to better use. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely greedy landlords out there, but it is NOT always their fault when a tenant chooses to close.

  2. A big win, though, for the animals — countless hundreds of thousands who likely died horrific deaths on factory farms so their smoked and crisped flesh could be served to tourists and finance bros. Also for fans of unions. (Danny Meyer a noted union buster)

  3. Any place you guys go to or order from for bbq? I would love some recs thanks!
