New York Liberty takes over Broadway for the day

The New York Liberty WNBA team got a ticker-tape parade today, taking over Broadway from The Battery to Chambers Street and ending with a ceremony at City Hall where they each got a key to the city.

It was a great tribute to a history-making team: one of the original teams when the WNBA was created, yet just now — 28 years later — getting its first championship win.

There was some speechifying from the electeds, including Governor Hochul and Eric Adams, but then the players all got to take the stage, including Ellie the Elephant, the team’s beloved mascot.

A few notes: I have never heard folks cheer for a CEO as they did for Keia Clarke; the mayor got booed when he tried to bring it back to himself; the helicopter noise almost ruined the whole event; the all women drumline Fogo Azul warmed up the crowd; Jonquel Jones led the crowd in the chant, “We all we got, we all we need”; and Ellie got to dance with a player of her choice to wrap things up.

Sanitation then swooped in to take care of the thousands of pounds of confetti and shredded paper left behind.

  1. Congratulations to this fantastic team! So glad they got their parade, and now they’ll be immortalized with their granite plaque on Broadway. They didn’t make it easy, and it wasn’t necessarily pretty. But they got it done.
