Seen & Heard: Los Tacos No. 1 doing its part

SHOUT OUT TO LOS TACOS NO. 1
…for washing the sidewalks on Church, which largely smell like pee in spots where folks don’t do the same. #grateful

LIQUOR LICENSES FOR THE STOCK EXCHANGE
Never thought about it before, but there are multiple bars in the NY Stock Exchange on Wall Street. CB1’s Licensing Committee just approved their application for catering spaces on floors 1, 6, 7 and 8.

TURTLE SIGHTING IN HUDSON RIVER
M. spotted this guy paddling along just north of Stuy. She figured he/she was about 10 to 12 inches long. “In 25 years if walking the river, this was my first turtle sighting,” she noted.

AM I THE LAST TO KNOW 60 CENTRE IS A HEXAGON?
Community Board 1 saw a presentation from the city about restoration to 60 Centre, the New York County Courthouse. I had no idea until I saw the diagram from above that it was a hexagon. And there are six courtyards!

  1. The NYSE hosts conferences and other events, and companies listed there are also able to hold events and meetings there. They don’t really have bars, but they will set up a table with beer, wine and liquor and have a bartender if it makes sense for the particular event.

  2. I get that the sidewalks stink but there’s a water emergency. I’d rather have water to shower than wash sidewalks.

  3. The sidewalks stink because nobody curbs their dog anymore. The city could fund the schools with a simple month of ticketing dog owners who haven’t trained their pets to crap at the curb/gutter rather than the middle of the sidewalk (or the grass in the parks, or the elevators in buildings …)

    • Sadly that is true.
Not to mention folks who proactively let their dogs pee on schools and places of worship.

My terrific neighbor takes a small squirt bottle when she walks her dog – and then squirts water where her dog goes. It would be great if everyone did this.

    • Agree with you. Over in battery park, I find it frustrating when dog owners allow their dogs to use the grass of the parks to go to the bathroom. I’ve even seen dog owners allow their dogs to use sandy areas in the playgrounds for the same purpose. There are of course many signs indicating that this is prohibited. It’s very disrespectful to the children, families and other people that use those areas for recreation.

    • Are you sure it’s dogs peeing on that sidewalk….

    • Here we go with the anti-dog crowd. You don’t complain enough on Nextdoor about dogs? We live in a city of over 8 million people, many with dogs. Try a little patience and compassion for your fellow NYer. Your life will be easier if you do.

      • Dog owners are quick to blame things on others instead of taking responsibility for their own behavior. Why do I see at least 4 or 5 dogs in Whole Foods every time I go? These are pets (not service dogs) that dog owners feel they have the right to parade around the store even though it is against NYC Health codes (which WF is not enforcing). Dog owners do not have the right to disobey rules (dogs in food stores) and common etiquette (curbing your dog) and think everyone else should be tolerant of their bad behavior.

        • K. Say it!!!! No dogs allowed. I’m wearing my Dark MAGA cap to Whole Foods next time. I’ll be kicked out, and the dogs will continue to break the law along with their elite owners.

          • Interestingly a neighbor who describes himself as very progressive sees the trend of dog parents taking dogs where dogs are not permitted (and the entitlement) as related to MAGA culture- do whatever you want no matter what.

    • I agree with J Frank P. Nothing against people having dogs. Just asking dog owners to be considerate of others and not let their dogs pee on sidewalks or on the sides of buildings. Not a big ask, and common courtesy

  4. The design architect won a competition in 1913 that would have been a circular building reminiscent of the Colosseum. WWI and related delays forced a “value engineering” of the courthouse into a hexagon, for 25-35% of the original estimated coat.
