This neighborhood has a few shops that are not only one-of-a-kind in the city, but in the region. You can shop your whole list within steps of your door. And please, at the risk of being preachy, don’t read this and then go to Amazon! These shops won’t last if we don’t support them.
KORIN
57 Warren St | West Broadway and Church)
I could do all my shopping at Korin, the Japanese restaurant supply store and knife store, and in past years I have.
••• It’s not Japanese, but it’s a perfect hostess gift for the wine enthusiast. Cork screw from France, $110.
••• There is a range, but we could not resist going straight to the top: steak knives with assorted mammoth bone handles. $3950. (Or go for the carbon fiber ones at $885.)
PHILIP WILLIAMS POSTERS
122 Chambers | West Broadway & Church
A Tribeca stalwart, the poster museum has thousands of vintage finds and also smaller printed collectibles.
••• Philip just purchased an entire collection of 600 posters about posters and posters about exhibitions. One is better than the next. Ranging from $300 to $600.
••• I could spend hours — and I have — sorting through his hundreds of New Yorker covers. This time we looked for Santas — and found lots (see the rest below). $30 each.
HEMINGWAY AFRICAN GALLERY
88 Leonard | Broadway & Church
The family business leads safaris, commissions modern African crafts and collects and sells antiques.
••• Logan Gaisford sourced these beaded animals in South Africa: we picked out the rhino. $250. (They start at $100.)
••• A unique set of salad tongs/serving spoons is always appreciated around party season. From Uganda. $55.
RE: AL
165 Hudson | entrance on Laight | open Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 7p
The wonderful jewel box of a store by Tribecan Al Abayan is filled with unique treasures that are uncategorizable.
••• Yes, that *is* a Basquiat cookie jar. And other cultural icons — Kurt Cobain, Anna Wintour — serving as candle holders. Basquiat is $800. The candle holders range from $200 to $400.
••• Because the stuff we use every day for boring chores can and should be beautiful too. Dust broom made in Kentucky, $
MYSTERIOUS BOOKSHOP
58 Warren | West Broadway and Church
The independent bookstore is a rare find. Celebrate it.
••• Best party theme: The Food to Die For cookbook assembles recipes from the country’s notoriously haunted houses, like Ernest Hemingway’s bloody mary from the Hemingway Home & Museum or fried chicken from the Missouri State Penitentiary. $24.
••• The Murdle puzzle book — fun for the whole family this holiday season. $18.
CHURCH STREET SURPLUS
Celebrating 52 years, the store has collections of military items from around the world — and then some.
••• All of these liners are so cool, though this one with the zippered patch pocket from Germany was the coolest. $79
••• There are piles of one-of-a-kind wool blankets and quilts — so fun to peruse. This Hudson Bay one from England was queen sized for $250.
ONDA BEAUTY
117 West Broadway | Reade & Duane
Tribecan Larissa Thomson relaunched the clean beauty shop and spa at its original location, and she’s often there for a consult on the season’s best items. But this year she is doing a special gift box to benefit Every Mother Counts, the non-profit dedicated to maternal health founded by Tribecan Christy Turlington. The Winter Treat Box is $100, with $150 worth of products; the Holiday Feast Box is $360 for $610 worth of products. Order here or stop in. (Also, for the record, I am loving the Scarlett Johansson products I got during last year’s shopping guide tour.)
TEA DEALERS & CERAMICS
So very exciting to have a new shop in town! The husband and wife team offer, as the name says, teas and ceramics from around the world. She is the artist; he is the brew expert. Tea tastings there would also make a great gift! I had to go with three items because I couldn’t decide.
••• The pewter sake pitchers are beyond. $395-495.
••• For the pal who keeps saying they want to get into matcha. $260.
••• These are the sweetest incense holders ever. $180 for the rabbit; incense set for $95.
TRIBECA PAINT
217 W. Broadway | White and Franklin
Tribecan Andy Scheman is the third generation owner of our last remaining hardware store — and he has great gifts for the practical sorts.
••• For the beer lover in your life: the Stanley growler, which, by the way, you can drop from enormous heights. Deliver it filled. $57
••• Again, blow off Amazon! There must be one person in your life who doesn’t have a pickleball set yet. $70
PEARL RIVER MART
452 Broadway | Howard & Grand
The one honorary Soho mention on this list: the famed Chinese emporium moved during the pandemic from Walker to one block north of Canal.
••• The unisex satin bomber jacket is totally on my personal list. And it’s all-season. $175
••• Grab a couple of these and you will be glad you did — for any age. $18-24.
TRIBECA APOTHECARY
138 West Broadway | Duane & Thomas
Yes, it’s a pharmacy, but the front of the house has all sorts of hard-to-find beauty products.
••• My old pals Malin + Goetz have something new every season, but the essentials travel kit is perfect for the jet setter. $40
••• Everyone has a candle these days, but these are especially striking and a great gift to go along with bubble bath. The Baobab with four wicks. $210
SHINOLA
177 Franklin | Greenwich and Hudson
Based in Detroit, the watchmaker always has the craftiest gifts.
••• A poker set with a laser cut top will look great on the coffee table even when you’re not playing. $495
••• You can personalize the strap on this work bag with a built-in laptop sleeve, which has the most amazing textured leather. $795.
