Sushi of Gari has closed

Sushi of Gari, the Japanese restaurant on the corner of West Broadway and Duane, has closed after 12 years on that prominent corner. Their last day was yesterday, Nov. 23.

“We thank you for your support all these years,” the note on the door said — and thanks to MD for sending the photo. “We have cherished every moment serving you and being a part of this wonderful Tribeca community.”

They urged customers to come visit them at one of their other three locations: Sushi of Gari 46, Sushi of Gari UWS and Sushi of Gari UES.

I did hear back on email as well, and without giving specifics, the Tribeca Team said things did not “go well” with the lease. “Hopefully we will open another location downtown in the future. Until then, we want to thank you and it was a pleasure serving the Tribeca community for 12 years.”

The restaurant opened its Tribeca location in 2012 in the Upstairs at Bouley space and at the time, it was the local chain’s fifth outpost, after ones on the Upper East Side, Upper West Side, Midtown West, and in the Plaza Hotel. They spruced up the space in 2021.

This is a big loss for what I would call Tribeca’s restaurant row; and the building, one of the few taxpayers in the neighborhood, might be prime for development? I will investigate that in the next days…

  1. The space is on the market for $20k a month. Not sure if there are relocation clauses for redevelopment, but as you said – prime space for redevelopment into…yet another condo.

  2. Great – another kids store or fitness class coming soon
