The SotoMethod, a fitness routine started by former Tribecan Hilary Hoffman and incubated here in the neighborhood, has taken a permanent space at 68 Thomas, between West Broadway and Church. They start classes tomorrow and are booking now.
More when I can get in there to see the space, but the quick overview (I spoke to Hilary back in January, when she had a space on Warren, then managed to sit on it too long and they left that space): Hilary was at Goldman from 2013 to 2019, and found her lifestyle too sedentary — frustrating for a former competitive runner.
When her husband’s job took the couple to LA, she studied the science behind isometrics and started working out in her garage — and folks started asking her about her routine. By August 2021, she had left her job as a derivatives trader (and another gig in commercial real estate) and Soto became my full time job, but it was all online. She built it organically by word of mouth, and when they moved back east, she started in person.
SOTO stands for sixty on, ten on: each exercise includes a 60-second hold followed by 10 movements for 20 seconds each. “When you know what’s coming, you can burn out — you can give it your all,” said Hilary. “That predictability element is a core element.”
More Tk when I get over there.
