Because I can’t get over what a different experience it is to walk in front of PS 234 now — I actually giggled as I rounded the corner from Chambers to Greenwich — and because W. sent the shot of the scaffolding coming off the Powell Building on Hudson, it seemed a good time to do a sidewalk shed round-up.
Other good news: the shed is coming down from the Powell Building at Hudson and Franklin (Beef Bar must be happy!) and the work looks like it has been completed on One Hudson.
There are now 254 active sheds in Community District 1, using this interactive map from the city. More than 20 of them have been up for five years or more. (The shed at 46 Warren was first permitted in 2015; 41 Maiden Lane dates back to 2012.) Citywide there are 8,994 sheds up for an average of 489 days, and totaling 2,088,750 linear feet.
Back when I did a post in March 2023 on the legislative efforts being made to reduce the number of years sheds can remain standing, James Bogardus turned us on to the city’s site. Fidi guy noted then that this should be a question asked of every political candidate — and with a primary coming up, I will add it to the list. “I know I will not vote for any local politician that does not have a reasonable response to sidewalk shed/Local Law 11 reform,” he wrote.
10 Liberty Street in Fidi is finished and scaffolding is coming down so there is that too!
