New Kid on the Block: Playto

Playto, a for-profit daycare founded in Prospect Heights that now also has a location in Battery Park City, has opened on Hudson and Leonard, in the former Portfolio School space. Enrollment for full- and part-time is open, and drop-in services are also available.

The business is a start-up, though the founder is involved in another chain of daycares in Williamsburg. They are licensed so far for ages 0 to 2 — the next license should be ready within a few months, for ages 2 to 5. They are also potentially going to be a 3K and Pre-K location through the city Department of Education.

The space has five classrooms, three for infants and toddlers for 26 kids, and two for preschool for up to 30 kids. There’s also a romper room open for all ages. Hours are 8a to 6p, with an extra fee for early drop-off at 7:30.

They will use a curriculum called Frog Street, which has a focus on social and emotional development, language development, cognitive development and physical development. And like so many new daycares, they use an app to give regular updates on the kids.

The Portfolio School moved to that space in 2019, after opening on N. Moore in 2016. When the school was scheduled to close in 2023, a group of parents and teachers tried to save it as a coop, but that never came to be. It’s a beautiful space.
